The best time for ice fishing in Rovaniemi

The ice decides when trips run. Daylight and cold decide how the morning on the lake feels.

The short answer

The best time for ice fishing in Rovaniemi is February and March, when the lakes have usually been frozen for weeks and the days are long again. Visit Rovaniemi gives December to March as the usual frozen season. December has the shortest days, January and February are the coldest months, and early or late in the season operators may cancel or drive further to find safe ice.

The ice season

Visit Rovaniemi writes that the waters are generally frozen from December until March, and also that there is no sure way of telling when the ice is thick enough to carry people. Operators decide trip by trip. Apukka runs its ice fishing only when the ice is confirmed thick enough, which usually takes a long spell below freezing, and refunds the trip in full if it is cancelled for lack of ice. Arctic Safari Guides notes that trips in early winter and in spring may drive further from Rovaniemi to reach safe ice.

One reviewer fishing with Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park in November writes that her group were the first on the lake that season. Bookings that early are possible, but have a back-up plan for the day.

Daylight from December to March

On a daytime trip the light changes the feel of the outing a lot. In the centre of Rovaniemi the sun rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22 on 21 December, according to the US Naval Observatory; the blue twilight before and after lasts several hours. By 1 February the sun is up from 09:19 to 15:43, and by 1 March from 07:33 to 17:28. Reviewers fishing in December and January describe watching the sunrise from the ice.

The coldest weeks

January and February are the coldest months at Rovaniemi airport, both with an average of −10.3 °C over 1991–2020, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute. December averages −7.7 °C and March −5.6 °C. Sitting still at an ice hole feels colder than these numbers, and the trips go out in most weather: Wild about Lapland in all conditions, while Uncle's Fish cancels below −25 °C and refunds the trip in full. The page on what to wear covers layers.

Evening trips and the northern lights

The evening trip by Uncle's Fish fishes for burbot, which the operator says is most active on midwinter evenings, and the lake has little light pollution. Northern lights are possible over the ice on a clear night but never guaranteed. A reviewer of the snowshoe trip by Wild about Lapland saw the aurora while fishing in April.

The season in the reviews

From the first ice in November to an aurora in April, with cold the most common warning.

“I booked this tour for myself and my 12 year-old son. He enjoys fishing, but I don’t fish so it was a great experience. He enjoyed this activity and caught a fish! I also caught a fish. … We were the first ones on the lake this season. We had the whole lake to ourselves.”

February and March: the lakes have usually been frozen for weeks and the days are much longer than in December. Visit Rovaniemi gives December to March as the usual frozen season.

Can you go ice fishing in Rovaniemi in November or April?

Sometimes. It depends on the ice, and operators decide trip by trip. Apukka runs only when the ice is confirmed thick enough and refunds you if it is not, and Arctic Safari Guides may drive further for safe ice early and late in the season.

Is it too cold for ice fishing in January?

Most trips run in January, and the operators lend winter clothing on most of them. Uncle's Fish cancels its trips in very deep frost and refunds them. Dress in layers either way.

Is it dark during ice fishing trips in December?

Around the shortest day the sun is up for only a couple of hours around midday, with long blue twilight before and after. A morning trip then starts in twilight.
