Ice fishing after a short walk through old forest
Onto the ice: 5–10 min forest walk
The listings carry near-identical titles. The differences are in the way onto the ice, the clothing, the food and what happens to the fish.
The short answer
Rovaniemi's ice fishing tours differ mainly in how you reach the lake (a 5–10 minute forest walk, a reindeer sleigh, 2 km on snowshoes or a sleigh behind a snowmobile), in whether winter clothing is included and in what happens to your catch. Most listings lend an overall or winter clothing; the evening trip charges extra for it and Arctic Safari Guides sells it as an add-on. Wild about Lapland, Apukka and Beyond Arctic cook or fry a fish on the spot, and no operator can promise a bite. At Lapland Camp, Shaman Village and Polar Magic Tour and on the net-fishing trip by Uncle's Fish, clothing is not included, so bring your own.
"Not stated" in the table means the listing does not say, not that the answer is no.

Nearly every trip on this page ends the same way: a hole in the ice, a short rod, a fire and a hot drink. What differs is written further down each listing. One reaches the lake on foot, another by reindeer sleigh; one lends you an overall and boots, another charges for them; one cooks a big catch on the fire, another serves smoked salmon whatever you catch. The table lines up the way onto the ice, the duration, the clothing, the catch and the pickup, sorted by number of reviews; group size, minimum age and food for each trip follow in the fact sheet further down.

Each price is the per-person starting price GetYourGuide shows for the ice fishing listing when this page loads, so on a trip with a short and a long option it belongs to the shorter one.
If you want to drive the snowmobile yourself and fish on the way, those safaris are compared on our snowmobile site, with the driving time of each: snowmobile and ice fishing tours in Rovaniemi. They are not listed on this page.
One trip for each kind of outing, chosen on the details in the table above. All trips on this page follow further down.

The founder, who has fished Lapland's lakes and rivers for decades, chooses the spot by the ice. Pick about 1.5 hours on the ice, or the longer option with a Finnish barbecue lunch.
Grilled sausages, a Finnish rice cake, hot juice and gingerbread after the fishing, in a group of at most 8 with hotel pickup.
2 km on snowshoes across a frozen lake to the fishing spot and a fire lit without matches, at most 8 people. Hotel pickup only outside the city centre.
Each card starts with how you get onto the ice. Open it for the full list of what is included and who the trip does not suit.
A short walk through old forest to the lake, your own hole in the ice, and a big catch goes straight onto the fire. The guide also explains how locals fish with nets under the ice.
The van stops at the edge of an old forest, and a walk of 5 to 10 minutes brings you out onto a frozen lake. The guide shows how people in the Arctic have fished through ice up to a metre thick, including nets set under the surface, and then you try it yourself with your own hole.
If you land a big fish, it goes straight onto the fire. Fish that are too small are put back. The tour runs in all weather.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A 20 km drive north, then 2 km on snowshoes across a frozen lake to the fishing spot. The guide shows you how to light a fire without matches.
From Rovaniemi the group drives about 20 km north into the Arctic Circle, then walks 2 km on snowshoes across a frozen lake through deep snow to the fishing spot. Everyone prepares and drills a hole of their own.

Frozen lakes near the Arctic Circle, overalls, boots and gloves on loan, and sausages with warm juice by the campfire.
A guide takes you to a frozen lake near the Arctic Circle and shows the traditional Finnish way of fishing through the ice. The operator lists trout, rainbow trout, perch and whitefish as the species in these lakes.
During the programme there are sausages and hot juice by the fire. The listing points out that the fishing takes place on natural ice and that moving around on it is at your own risk.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A local fisherman and a photography guide, at most 8 people, and edited photos to download afterwards. Whatever you catch, you can fry at the end.
A people carrier takes you about 20 minutes out of Rovaniemi, and a short walk leads to the lake. With a local fisherman you learn how to catch fish hiding under a metre of ice. The lake also suits landscape and wildlife photography, and the listing names a wilderness and photography guide.
The guide sets up a campfire for hot drinks and snacks. At the end, whatever you caught can be fried on the spot. A password for the edited photo collection follows after the tour.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
The guide shows you how to make a hole in the thick ice and lights a birch-wood fire, with a salmon sandwich and hot berry juice. Warm blankets are listed, winter clothing is not.
The guide takes the group to a frozen lake and shows how to cut a hole through the thick ice. Then there is a salmon sandwich with a cup of hot berry juice.

Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A lake reached from the operator's own lakefront property, at most 8 guests, thermal overalls, and grilled sausages with hot drinks by the fire. Runs with at least two participants.
A van collects you in Rovaniemi and drives to a lake the operator reaches from its own property. The guide shows the traditional way: drilling through the ice, then setting up the line. The listing names perch and pike as fish you might catch with luck.
While you wait, the guide makes hot drinks and grills sausages at the fire.

A remote lake reached by minibus and a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile, a heated kota on the ice, and a demonstration of winter net fishing. You ride in the sleigh, you do not drive.
Pickup covers accommodation within 10 km of Rovaniemi centre. A 45-minute minibus ride and a 15-minute sleigh transfer behind a snowmobile bring you to Niesikivalo, a remote wilderness lake. You ride in the sleigh; you do not drive.
On the lake stands a heated Lappish kota with a fishing hole inside, so you can keep fishing when it is windy. Outside, the guide teaches the basics, shows how local fishermen set nets under the ice and grills Finnish sausages over a small fire in the kota. There is sledging for children and adults, and a viewpoint if time allows.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
Designed by the founder, Timo, who has fished the lakes and rivers of Lapland for decades and picks the spot by the ice conditions. Choose about 1.5 hours on the ice or the 4-hour option with about 3 hours of fishing and a Finnish barbecue lunch.
The founder of Arctic Safari Guides, Timo, built this trip around his own decades of fishing the lakes and rivers of Lapland. The spot is not fixed: the guide chooses it by weather and ice, so you may fish on a frozen river or a lake around Rovaniemi, and early or late in the season the drive can be longer.
The 2-hour option gives about 1.5 hours on the ice with a light snack and a warm drink. The 4-hour Premium option adds hotel pickup, about 3 hours of fishing, a Finnish barbecue lunch, a small group and professional photos. You drill your own hole either way.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
The shortest outing here: an hour and a half on the frozen Ounasjoki river, where the guide drills the hole and you wait for perch by the fire with hot berry juice.
A short outing onto the frozen Ounasjoki river. The guide drills a hole in the ice above several metres of clear water, and you wait for perch or other freshwater fish with a warm drink by the fire.
The listing does not mention a transfer, so check where the trip starts before you book.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
An evening on the ice at Niesikivalo, fishing for burbot outdoors or in a heated teepee on the lake. Fishing permits are included; winter clothing costs extra.
Pickup is in the evening from accommodation within 10 km of Rovaniemi. After the drive to Niesikivalo, a sleigh behind a snowmobile takes the group to a private fishing area. The guide explains why burbot are most active on midwinter evenings and helps you drill your holes.
You fish outdoors or inside a heated Lappish teepee with a campfire, with hot drinks and light snacks through the evening. There is little light pollution at the lake, so northern lights are possible on a clear night, but nothing guarantees them.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A two-hour trip: a short walk through old forest to the lake, your own hole in the ice, and karjalanpiirakka pastries with a warm drink at the campfire.
The guide picks you up in Rovaniemi and drives to a chosen fishing spot. A walk of 5 to 10 minutes through old forest opens onto a wide frozen lake, where the guide explains how locals fish through ice up to a metre thick and how nets are sometimes set beneath it.
Then you drill your own hole and try it. At the campfire there are warm drinks and Finnish snacks, including Karelian rice pastries.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A snowshoe walk through the forest to the lake, ice fishing, and salmon smoked over the fire in a kota afterwards. Guides speak Chinese, English and Finnish.
The guide fits you with snowshoes for the deep forest snow and leads the walk to the lake. There you get the equipment and a short instruction, and wait for a bite. Whether or not anything bites, there is warm blueberry tea at the fire.
The day ends in a kota, where you learn to light a fire and prepare smoked salmon to a local recipe.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A reindeer sleigh at walking pace to the frozen lake, the guide walking beside the reindeer, then fishing and a reindeer sausage by the fire. New on the platform, no reviews yet.
A reindeer sleigh takes you through the forest to a frozen lake. The ride is at walking pace, and the guide steers by walking alongside the reindeer. On the lake the guide shows how to drill a hole by hand and drop the line.
A fire with hot drinks and reindeer sausages keeps everyone warm while you wait. The farm is a few minutes' walk from the resort, and the guides seat families together where they can. Apukka states that its reindeer tours are certified under Green Activities.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.
A 2–3 km reindeer ride through the forest to the lake and back, with clothing in children's sizes. In bad weather it becomes a reindeer walk. New on the platform, no reviews yet.
The reindeer ride covers 2 to 3 km through the forest, and the guide tells you about reindeer herding on the way. At the lake you get a short instruction and try your luck, with hot berry juice and biscuits by the fire. The sleigh brings you back.
If the weather does not allow a sleigh ride, the operator runs a reindeer walk instead. The tour may be cancelled or moved if fewer than 4 people book.
Transfer, clothing and food as the operator lists them on the booking page.

Clothing and what happens to the catch are in the table above.
Most trips drive you out of Rovaniemi and finish with a short walk. Wild about Lapland and Lapland Royal Adventures both lead the last 5 to 10 minutes through old forest before the lake opens up, and Beyond Arctic drives about 20 minutes by people carrier before a short walk. Apukka collects guests in the city centre or at Santa Claus Village and takes them to its resort. Shaman Village fishes on the frozen Ounasjoki river and lists no transfer at all, so check the start point before you book.
Three kinds of trip make the way to the lake part of the outing. Apukka and StayLapland use a reindeer sleigh, at walking pace with the guide beside the animals at Apukka and over 2 to 3 km of forest at StayLapland, where bad weather turns the ride into a walk. Wild about Lapland crosses 2 km of frozen lake on snowshoes, and Super Vi starts with a snowshoe walk through the forest. Uncle's Fish drives 45 minutes by minibus and then pulls guests to Niesikivalo lake in a sleigh behind a snowmobile, which you sit in rather than drive.
An overall or a set of winter clothing with boots appears in most listings, and Apukka adds woollen socks and mittens. StayLapland has sizes for adults and children on its reindeer trip. A few listings work differently. On the evening trip with Uncle's Fish, overalls, boots, gloves and hats cost extra, and the operator asks for proper base layers either way. Arctic Safari Guides asks you to dress warmly or add its winter clothing package after booking. Lapland Camp lists warm blankets but no clothing. Shaman Village, Polar Magic Tour and the net-fishing trip by Uncle's Fish do not include clothing either, so bring your own. Safartica includes thermal clothing and still recommends an extra warm layer of your own.
Few listings say. Wild about Lapland cooks a big fish straight over the fire and returns undersized ones to the water. At Apukka the guide prepares anything you land as a snack on the spot, and Beyond Arctic lets you fry your catch at the end of the trip. Elsewhere the listings do not say, and Uncle's Fish and Arctic Safari Guides both state that a catch cannot be guaranteed.
Arctic Safari Guides was founded by Timo, who has fished the lakes and rivers of Lapland for decades and designed this trip himself. The spot changes with the weather and the ice, so you may fish on a river one day and a lake the next, and early or late in the season the drive can be longer. The short option gives about an hour and a half on the ice with a snack; the 4-hour option adds hotel pickup, about three hours of fishing, a Finnish barbecue lunch and professional photos.
For the nets, Uncle's Fish runs a private trip to Niesikivalo with a demonstration of winter net fishing, the method local fishermen still use. A heated kota stands on the ice with a fishing hole inside, there is sledging for adults and children, and sausages are grilled over a small fire in the kota. Wild about Lapland and Lapland Royal Adventures also explain how nets are set under the ice.
The evening trip by Uncle's Fish goes to the same lake for burbot, which the operator says is most active on midwinter evenings. You fish under the open sky or inside a heated teepee with a campfire, fishing permits are included and the group is at most 8. Northern lights are possible over the lake on a clear night, but nothing guarantees them; for trips built around the aurora, see rovaniemi-northernlights.com. Uncle's Fish calls off its trips below −25 °C and refunds them in full.
Grilled sausages and a hot drink are the usual meal. Polar Magic Tour adds a Finnish rice cake, hot juice and gingerbread, Lapland Royal Adventures serves karjalanpiirakka, the Karelian rice pastries, and Apukka grills reindeer sausage on its sleigh trip. Super Vi ends with salmon smoked over the fire in a kota. On Wild about Lapland's snowshoe trip, lunch is not included; there is a campfire snack.
Where a group limit is stated it is 8: Wild about Lapland on snowshoes, Beyond Arctic, Arctic GM, Polar Magic Tour and the evening trip with Uncle's Fish. The net-fishing trip is private, and Arctic Safari Guides keeps the 4-hour option to a small group. Stated minimum ages are 2 at Lapland Royal Adventures, 3 at Shaman Village and 5 at Super Vi. StayLapland asks that children under 13 come with an adult paying the full price.
Some trips need a minimum number of guests: two adults at Safartica, two at Arctic GM, four at StayLapland, and at Super Vi two on weekdays and Saturdays but four on Sundays and public holidays. If too few people book, these trips can be moved or cancelled, so a solo traveller is better off with a trip that states no minimum.
If you only want the snowshoe walk, without fishing, guided snowshoe tours are compared on rovaniemisnowshoe.com.
The reviews confirm the differences in the table: a sleigh behind a snowmobile, a private trip when no one else books, and a city-centre meeting point for the snowshoe trip. The critical review describes a guide who left the group alone for most of the fishing.
“This was a great activity! While we didn't catch any fish, we had a blast with Juliette. Pickup was easy and comfortable. Between the warm weather gear, the fire, the snacks, and the chairs, we were warm and cosy.”
“The guide took us to the lake, showed how to make a hole in the ice and briefly how to use the rod and then left us all on the frozen lake for about 1 hour as he got wood and made a fire. No instruction of what to do when we caught a fish or any interesting information as we fished about the area, fish, Finland etc.”
“He transported us deep into the pristine winter wilderness on his snowmobile pulling a sleigh — an exciting ride in itself! We ended up on a beautiful frozen lake where he has a cozy tipi shelter set up. … He taught us both traditional net fishing under the ice and classic ice fishing techniques, explaining everything clearly. While we only managed to catch one small fish …”
“Highly recommend this tour, we had a private tour with marjo as there was no one joining us. She made sure we were warm and explained the process to us. She even picked us to and from our accommodations, and then to santa claus village.”
“The meeting point at the Rovaniemi city office was centrally located and very easy to walk to from our VRBO. … We enjoyed a short walk through the forest with snowshoes to arrive at the frozen lake, where we we taught how to drill a hole in the ice for ice fishing!”
“We had a great time ice fishing! We were a group of 6 and had a private 90-min experience. Though we didn't catch anything in the end, we learned a lot and enjoyed asking questions and hearing stories from the local guide.”
Reviews of ice fishing trips from Rovaniemi, quoted from GetYourGuide.
Wild about Lapland, Apukka and Beyond Arctic say so. Wild about Lapland cooks a big fish over the fire and puts undersized ones back, Apukka prepares your catch as a snack on the spot, and Beyond Arctic lets you fry it at the end. The other listings do not say what happens to the catch.
The evening trip with Uncle's Fish charges extra for overalls and boots, and Arctic Safari Guides offers a clothing package you add after booking. The Lapland Camp listing names warm blankets but no clothing. Shaman Village, Polar Magic Tour and the net-fishing trip by Uncle's Fish do not include clothing either, so bring your own. Most other trips list an overall or winter clothing and boots.
Yes. Arctic Safari Guides was founded by a fisherman who has fished Lapland's lakes and rivers for decades and chooses the spot by the ice. Beyond Arctic also fishes together with an experienced local fisherman, and Uncle's Fish shows how local fishermen use nets under the ice.
The listing does not give that detail. It does not mean no. If something like the minimum age or the pickup area matters to you, ask the operator before you book.
