What to wear for ice fishing in Rovaniemi

Most trips lend an overall and boots. What you wear underneath decides how long you stay warm at the ice hole.

The short answer

For ice fishing in Rovaniemi, wear thermal base layers, a wool or fleece mid-layer, a hat, gloves and warm socks, and let the operator add the outer layer. Most trips lend an overall or winter clothing and boots. The evening trip by Uncle's Fish charges extra for them, Arctic Safari Guides sells a clothing package after booking, and the Lapland Camp listing names warm blankets but no clothing. Shaman Village, Polar Magic Tour and the net-fishing trip by Uncle's Fish do not include clothing either, so bring your own.

Each price is the per-person starting price GetYourGuide shows for the ice fishing listing when this page loads, so on a trip with a short and a long option it belongs to the shorter one.

What the operators lend

Wild about Lapland lends professional winter clothing and boots on both its trips. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park lists overalls, boots and gloves, and Apukka adds woollen socks and mittens to its overall and boots. StayLapland has overalls, boots, beanies and mittens in adult and children's sizes. Arctic GM lists thermal overalls, Lapland Royal Adventures an overall, Super Vi thermal jackets and shoes, and Beyond Arctic warm clothing and boots if needed.

A few listings differ. On the evening trip by Uncle's Fish, overalls, boots, gloves and hats cost extra. Arctic Safari Guides asks you to dress warmly or add a winter clothing package after booking. The Lapland Camp listing names warm blankets but no clothing. Shaman Village, Polar Magic Tour and the net-fishing trip by Uncle's Fish do not include clothing either, so bring your own.

Layers for sitting still

The operators who give advice agree on layers. Uncle's Fish asks for thermal base layers, fleece or wool mid-layers, gloves, a hat, a scarf and winter boots, and says that proper base layers matter even if you rent the outer suit. Safartica includes thermal clothing and still recommends bringing your own extra warm layer.

  • Thermal underwear top and bottom, then a wool or fleece layer.
  • A hat, a scarf and gloves, even when the trip lends mittens.
  • One spare warm layer in a bag, for the time at the ice hole.
  • Hand and feet warmers, which a reviewer of Uncle's Fish recommends.
Heads-up on boots and suits

Several reviewers report getting cold during the fishing even with the lent gear. One found the waterproof boots on the snowshoe trip poorly insulated and her toes very cold; another found that many of the suits handed out were wet. Try the boots on before you leave, and say so if a suit is damp.

Cold limits

Uncle's Fish cancels below −25 °C with a full refund. Wild about Lapland runs its trips in all weather, extreme cold included. The page on the season has the average temperatures from December to March.

Clothing and cold in the reviews

Warm gear and a fire get the praise. The two critical remarks, cold toes in thin boots and wet suits, come from reviews that were otherwise positive.

“This was a great activity! While we didn't catch any fish, we had a blast with Juliette. Pickup was easy and comfortable. Between the warm weather gear, the fire, the snacks, and the chairs, we were warm and cosy.”
Kevin · Australia · February 2026 Ice Fishing with a Forest Walk · Wild about Lapland
“Great activity! Both snowshoeing and ice fishing are great experiences. It can be quite uncomfortable due to the cold weather. They recommended we take their waterproof boots, but actually I think this was a mistake because the boots are not insulated well and our toes were very cold.”
Katarina · Ireland · February 2025 Snowshoeing and Ice Fishing · Wild about Lapland
“our guide was exceptional,A lot of the suits were wet and struggle to get asuit that was not wet”
Alma · South Africa · December 2025 Arctic Circle Ice Fishing · Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park
“It was really an authentic adventure in a very nice, peaceful location, and our guide was a passionate Finnish fisherman that showed us how to set up Net Fishing before continuing with ice fishing ourselves. We caught a few fish and had a nice lunch in a tent where you can warm up. … Highly recommend hand and feet warmers”
Desvigne · France · February 2026 Ice and Net Fishing at Niesikivalo · Uncle's Fish
“This was an amazing experience, Alex is very knowledgeable … we caught a fish! I would highly recommend booking - wrap up warm.”
Joanne · United Kingdom · March 2025 Ice Fishing Programme in Lapland · Lapland Camp Luxury Choice
“Was fun, we even grilled the fish that we catched. It is super cold though, bring very warm clothes!”

Questions and answers

Do ice fishing tours in Rovaniemi provide winter clothing?

Most do: an overall or winter clothing and boots are in the listing. The evening trip by Uncle's Fish charges extra, and Arctic Safari Guides sells a clothing package. At Lapland Camp, Shaman Village and Polar Magic Tour and on the net-fishing trip by Uncle's Fish, clothing is not included, so bring your own.

What should I wear under the overall?

Thermal base layers and a wool or fleece mid-layer, warm socks, a hat and gloves. Uncle's Fish says proper base layers are essential even with a rented suit.

Are the lent boots warm enough?

Usually, but not always. One reviewer found the waterproof boots on a snowshoe trip poorly insulated. Wear wool socks and ask for insulated boots.

Is there clothing for children?

StayLapland lends overalls, boots, beanies and mittens in children's sizes on its reindeer trip. Other operators rarely mention sizes, so ask before you book.
