The species operators name
We list only what the operators write in their listings. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park names trout, rainbow trout, perch and whitefish for its lakes near the Arctic Circle. Apukka and Shaman Village both mention waiting for perch or other freshwater fish, Shaman Village on the Ounasjoki river. Arctic GM says that with luck you might catch perch or pike. The evening trip by Uncle's Fish targets burbot, which the operator says is most active on midwinter evenings.
Reviewers of Arctic Safari Guides report perch from a frozen river, and reviewers of Polar Magic Tour and Uncle's Fish describe several fish in one outing. Those are individual days, not a forecast.
A bite is never certain
Uncle's Fish and Arctic Safari Guides state in their listings that catches cannot be guaranteed, and the reviews bear it out. Many groups catch nothing, and many reviewers still enjoy the morning for the lake, the fire and the guide. If going home without a fish would spoil the day for you, pick a trip where the food at the fire does not depend on the catch, such as sausages, smoked salmon or the barbecue at Polar Magic Tour.
Heads-up on rods and bait
Several reviewers report that their whole group caught nothing and put it down to the gear: rods they describe as toys, and artificial rather than live bait. Reviewers of trips where the guide picks and changes the spot during the outing describe more catches. If the catch matters to you, ask the operator what bait they use.
What happens to your fish
On the Wild about Lapland trip a big fish is cooked straight over the fire, and undersized fish are always put back. At Apukka the guide prepares your catch as a snack on the spot, and on the Beyond Arctic trip you fry your catch of the day at the end. The other listings do not say if you can eat or keep a fish, so ask the operator before you book if it matters.
Do you need a fishing permit?
Not for ice fishing with one rod. Eräluvat, the permit service of Metsähallitus, lists hook-and-line fishing, ice fishing and fishing with a simple herring rig as general fishing rights that need no permit under the Fishing Act. These rights cover one rod at a time. Anyone aged 18 to 69 who fishes with two or more rods needs to pay the fisheries management fee and have the permission of the owner of the water.
The general rights do not apply in rapids and running waters with migratory fish, or where fishing is otherwise restricted. On a guided trip the operator chooses the water and handles this for you; the evening trip by Uncle's Fish lists fishing permits as included. Source: Eräluvat, hook and line fishing and ice fishing.
Why we do not explain fishing on your own
Visit Rovaniemi writes that walking on the river ice in Rovaniemi is dangerous and forbidden, and that there is no sure way of telling when the ice is thick enough to carry people. The operators fish on ice they have checked and cancel when it is not safe. This site therefore covers guided trips only.
