Ice fishing and snowshoeing in Rovaniemi

Snowshoes take you through deep snow to the fishing spot, and the walk becomes half of the outing.

The short answer

Two trips from Rovaniemi combine snowshoeing with ice fishing. Wild about Lapland drives about 20 km north and crosses 2 km of frozen lake on snowshoes, in a group of at most 8, with pickup only for accommodation outside the city centre. Super Vi walks through the forest on snowshoes, fishes on a lake and ends with salmon smoked over the fire in a kota, from age 5.

Snowshoes spread your weight, so you can walk where ordinary boots sink into deep snow. On these trips the walk leads to the fishing spot, which makes for a longer and more active morning than a trip with a short walk from the van.

Wild about Lapland, across the lake

The group drives about 20 km north into the Arctic Circle and then walks 2 km on snowshoes across a frozen lake to the fishing spot. Everyone prepares and drills a hole. While you fish, the guide chops wood and shows how to light a fire without matches. Winter clothing, boots and the snowshoes are included, the group is at most 8, and the listing says the trip runs in all weather, extreme cold included. There is a campfire snack but no lunch.

Hotel pickup applies only to accommodation outside the city centre. One reviewer staying in town describes walking to the meeting point at the operator's city office. Reviewers also describe the route differently from the listing: some walked through the forest or around the lake rather than across it, which suggests the guides adapt the walk to the snow on the day.

Super Vi, with smoked salmon in a kota

Super Vi starts with a guided snowshoe walk through the forest, where the snow is deep enough that normal hiking shoes sink in. At the lake the guide explains the equipment, and you wait for a bite with a cup of warm blueberry tea at the campfire. Afterwards the group moves into a kota, learns to light a fire and prepares salmon smoked to a local recipe. Thermal jackets and shoes are lent, guides speak Chinese, English and Finnish, and children under 5 cannot join.

This trip needs a minimum number of guests: two on weekdays and Saturdays, four on Sundays and public holidays. The departure time can vary with the season and the number of bookings, and the listing notes that the lake ice depends on the temperature.

Cold feet on the way back

Walking warms you up, and the fishing then keeps you still on the ice for a while. One reviewer of the Wild about Lapland trip found the waterproof boots she was given poorly insulated and her toes very cold, so wear warm socks and ask for insulated boots. Another describes the rod as a toy; the reviews on the fishing gear are collected on the page about what you can catch.

Only the snowshoe walk

If you would rather walk all morning and skip the fishing, guided snowshoe tours in Rovaniemi are compared on rovaniemisnowshoe.com.

Snowshoes and fishing in the reviews

Most reviewers liked the walk more than the catch. The critical one is about the fishing rod, and one positive review warns about cold toes in thin boots.

“Snowshoeing was a lot of fun and not hard. The trail was easy and not very long. … We did not catch anything, which is very difficult because the fish are not very active, but it is so peaceful on the lake. Afterwards we went back in the tepee to warm up with sausage, bread and hot chocolate/tea. They had a vegetarian option as well.”

“Great activity! Both snowshoeing and ice fishing are great experiences. It can be quite uncomfortable due to the cold weather. They recommended we take their waterproof boots, but actually I think this was a mistake because the boots are not insulated well and our toes were very cold.”
Katarina · Ireland · February 2025 Snowshoeing and Ice Fishing · Wild about Lapland
“the tour guide marta was so nice but the fishing pole is like a toy you never will get anything.”
Aylin · United States · January 2026 Snowshoeing and Ice Fishing · Wild about Lapland
“We drove about 35 minutes to a frozen lake, where we walked all the way around while Archie introduced us to Finnish trees and related traditions. We even spotted tracks of an Arctic hare, which was amazing. Although we didn’t catch any fish, we had a wonderful time grilling and chatting together.”
Ma · Switzerland · December 2025 Snowshoeing and Ice Fishing · Wild about Lapland
“The activity was great. First, we had a hike around lake with snow shoes and fishing afterwards. Guide explain how the fishing works in general and helped us to drill a hole and fish. Despite the low chance of catching one, I was blessed to catch. We went to tent afterwarfds to warm up.”
Milan · Serbia · December 2025 Snowshoeing and Ice Fishing · Wild about Lapland
“My friends and I had so much fun :) We also got to see the Aurora while we were fishing!”
